Should I Get My Water Tested?
|
Should I get my water tested? If your home is on well or spring water, I would definitely test it for bacteria and other contaminants. You can do this yourself by finding a well drilling company or you can hire a home inspector. To find a certified water testing laboratory in your area, contact your state certification officer by visiting the U.S. EPA Web site at www.epa.gov/safewater/labs/index.html.
A few other excellent web sites are: National Safety Foundation: http://www.nsf.org/consumer/drinking_water/dw_well.asp?program=WaterTre and The Water Quality Association: http://www.wqa.org/
The cost is highly variable depending upon what you are testing for - between $75 and $300, depending on the tests and company you go to. Most inspectors charge $50 - $125 for a basic bacteria test. Inspectors use certified labs for testing.
Your Inspection Expert charges $75 for a bacteria test and our certified lab is Environmental, Inc.
If you're on city water, you should be fine. You may want to consider adding a whole house filtration system or an R.O. (Reverse Osmosis) water filtration system to remove sediment and odors. Remember, however, if your water is contaminated before it enters the filters, it will still be contaminated after it leaves the filters.
